Council Backs Creation of East Boston Cultural District

The Council expressed its strong support for the creation of a Cultural District in East Boston, adopting a resolution that affirms the neighborhood's vibrant artistic identity and recognizes the powerful role culture plays in driving equitable development.

East Boston is home to a dynamic network of cultural institutions, artists, and creative enterprises that contribute significantly to the city’s economic life and community fabric. The proposed Cultural District designation would help preserve local landmarks and open spaces, promote neighborhood heritage, and elevate East Boston’s presence as a hub for arts and cultural activity in Boston.

Currently, the City of Boston has four designated cultural districts – Fenway, Roxbury, Latin Quarter, and Boston Little Saigon – through the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s program. A resolution of support from the municipality is required as part of the state’s cultural district designation process, making the Council’s vote an official component of advancing the application.

Community stakeholders in East Boston – including civic groups, cultural leaders, and advocates – are actively preparing an application, recognizing the wide-ranging benefits the designation could bring. These include supporting small, community-owned businesses, creating jobs, promoting public art and performances, preserving historic buildings, expanding access to green and cultural spaces, and protecting artists and nonprofits from displacement.

The Council emphasized that the district would reflect East Boston’s community values – inclusivity, accessibility, affordability, and respect for neighborhood character – while opening the door to new funding, collaborative planning, and long-term investment in the local cultural ecosystem.

A copy of the resolution will be sent to the Mayor and the Massachusetts Cultural Council to show the Council’s support.
